Happy Christmas?

For those that don't know, Holland celebrates Christmas on December the 5th not the 25th. Remember remember the 5th of December... ummmm... So ya, this Christmas that they celebrate involves, as far as I can tell, a Santa (Sinter Claus actually) in a pope's hat and a pope cane and thousands of cheerful 'little black helpers'. And instead of presents coming down the chimney and put under the tree in the middle of the night, the presents come just after supper with a knock on the door delivered by one of these 'little black helpers'. Santa is never actually seen, obviously because white people don't do any of the work at all when black helpers are around obviously... And who are they you ask? Why nothing but a harmless, cheerful little bunch of white people dressed up as elves wearing black mask... Oh for the days of European colonialism. So ya, the presents are all waiting for the youngest person in the family to bring them all inside and give them to the people they're for. This youngest person, let's call her a 'she'... being a girl... name of A. Bernakevitch... or maybe, Adrienne B. also has another sorta pretty cool task to do. She has the pleasant task of reading aloud all of the poems and 'roasts' that people make for each other as they're all sitting around after supper drinking eggnog. Cool huh? Cause after you're about 18 and no longer believe in Sinter Claus, or in deficit spending, the presents become little poems and jokes that people make for each other to get a few laughs from them. Ahem...

'There once was a guy from Boston,
Had a big temper and at all times lost it,
He wanted to quit,
He pitched up a fit,
When in IM basketball he was accosted.'

'There once was a lady from Saskatchewan,
knew I liked cookies and made me a batch of 'em,
She moved to BC,
She's far older than me (and my Dad for that matter),
Wants revenge, but has nothing to catch me on.'

Kay that's it for now. later...

the dutch christmas thing - funny you should mention it. i was reading david sedaris' book "dress your family in denim and corduroy" and he has a chapter on this, specifically talking about the "cheerful black helpers"
