Sorry

The very last thing I did before I left work was knock down two birds nests that were being made in the doorway of the pro shop. They had worked all day on them. And there was even feathers that they had set down that would eventually have warmed the eggs. I felt so bad doing it. And the birds were just sitting there beside their nest looking at me as I did it. Sorry guys.

Life Lesson From a Coyote

Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club just happens to foster an entire pack of coyotes on premises... almost completley unafraid of us I learned when middle of the day saw a stand-off on number one tee-box... ... hit it too far right off the 6th tee and it's an unofficial hazard to unwilling souls facing 7 adultes raising 3 other little ones... ... ...
... and I don't even know if coyotes eat eggs... but lets pretend they do because it makes the story better... but I'm on range duty driving the picker around as a coyote runs out, tail up, to a golf ball, tries to bite it, fails, tail down, runs to another golf ball, tail up, tries to bite it, tail down, runs to another golf ball... ... ... and there's probably a thousand golf balls on this range and this dog is checking them all... starting every once in a while as a ball lands close by... walking over to sniff it, bite it, tail down... and I'm sitting here knowing the dog is wasting it's time... and little by little it's even starting to figure this out... but not soon enough... how to tell two things apart that look so similar... one satisfying and one a Rubber Polybutadiene cored titleist range ball... I can because I'm smarter and thus mandated to laugh and make fun of this and any thing and/or person not as smart as me...
... but take this up one step further... and bear with an outused sermon for a second... and think about a being with that much higher a perspective than me over that coyote... and how it might laugh at all of us in our own little pursuits of fulfillment... taking a bite of each one only to realize its full of Polybutadiene...

Hot and Cold Shower

Have you ever been in a new apartment... showering... two knobs in the shower... hot and cold... full turn them both off... only to have one side completely shut off and the other double power... and that sinking panic feeling sets in milliseconds before that scalding burning feeling hits you when body registers hot... jump before you even feel it kind of hot... (heat sense has a reflex mechanism in your spine so your body will move before your mind even registers a burn)... and stuck in the corner trying to acrobat yourself around the water with your arm... you flash back to a discovery channel episode explaining how scalding hot showers were used in insane asylums because it was believed it would rouse people out of their stupor... and you feel sorry for them... ... ...
... your still somewhat unsure of which way exactly you turned it last time... woah! wrong way and by now the water in the tub is burning your toes making you hop/adjust feet... small inches of turns (because any more and it takes your arm into the jet) slowly bring the water down... the pain will go away... memory won't... a battle fought all your own lasting tops 5 second yet the adrenaline is still pumping... you walk out all casual... ... ... you haven't?... me niether.

Cheria Law

One of my very first-month-friends in University (before the economic, racial, religious, club and varsity lines all took hold) had a penchant for calling me a racist and eating my brownie sundae if I wasn't paying close enough attention on Monday nights at John Harvard's half priced aps. It frustrated beyond anything that I was the socio-cultural-political stereotype of the white caucasion male, and that was fine because I wasn't a victim; but if I commented that she, just her alone, was a very good dancer I was a racist... That she had a right to be here because she was black, and that my ridiculous statement that entrance to the University should be merit-based was racist... I didn't know the agenda in the states where everything about being white is wrong... I didn't know it was time to step aside on account of moral historical principle... I was from Canada... I liked to think of myself within the multicultural paradigm of Brian Mulrony. I thought I was the one being marginalized... We butted heads, Cheria and I... And met somewhere in the middle after 4 years of college.
Cut one monsters head off and 3 more grow in it's place. Now the rest of my adult life will be defined along the lines of political correctness... women's rights, gay marriage, religious tolerance... (Nothing against any of them, but they are monsters) and the newest thing to wake me up in 2009 is to hear about Sharia law. A unilateral system intolerant of anyone elses views or standpoints now appealing to political correctness.

Precedence is power my friend. It worked for black slaves, it worked for women, it's working for gay rights (is that the right PC word?), and it's working believe it or not for radical Islam. This UN proposal urges every country in the UN to criminalize any form of derogatory speech directed at religion, most notable Islam. The full effects of this law were seen not too long ago in Canada when Macleans was accused of defaming Islam for an article that largely quoted things that radical Islam leaders said of their own faith.

We've come full circle on the whole 'sticks and stones will break my bones but names can never hurt me' thing. We don't care about physical intimidation, taking away people's rights, and killings in the name of religion, but call them out on it in a paper and get taken to court? And this is an issue that is not suddenly going to go away anytime soon if you look at the demographics.

But the dark side of granting political correctness this kind of power is what happens when the demographics reach a certain tipping point. And that is that political correctness goes out the window.

Nigeria is the latest country to enstate Sharia Law in the north of the country, and is pushing its agenda to make the whole nation Muslim. France has just pushed its Muslim population over 20%, about the time (most experts say) when the first big impact on freedom of speech and action are felt in a country. We'll find out what happens there. Control is not always a bad thing. Control murderers, control thieves, control annoying people that read over my shoulder on buses... the very best thing of Sharia law is the fear of punishment demands control... but control everything and suddenly we are the very definition of totalinarianism. Total Control. 1984 control... and with the technology available to us at present... it's scary...

And it's our inability to take a stance that allows it to happen. Just as everything about slavery was wrong, everything about Western Imperialism is wrong. Not only should whites hate themselves about racism, but the US should hate itself as well about expansionism. And I'm the first person to cry out against the terrible things the West has done, and is doing, but is this the answer? Should we roll over and die in shame and let a similar totalitarian regime, that looks surprisingly like the Vatican before the Great Reformation, take control of the world? It took us almost 2000 years of totalitarian dark ages to remember Rome. Will it take another 2000 year totalitarian rule to remember the United States?

Life Lessons From a 5 Year old

I remember playing a board game with a five year old... involving dice... more than likely it was Trouble... 4 different colors and a popper in the middle to roll the dice... and the thing about 5 year olds with any sort of game is... they always win... you can never beat them... the second I roll a number to put my little blue guy into the end, or put his little red guy back to the start, a new rule is discovered... unofficially... preceding... superceding... a combination of historocity and newspeak... to guarantee a win... and I don't even think it was him consciously cheating as much as I think it was his selection of disney movies programming him think it unimaginable that he could lose... he has to be the special one... the hero... and where Walt Disney couldn't write a fairie god-mother into his story he would write one for himself... because if not... if he fails... there is nothing else lovable... there is only the hated failure... the enemy... Scar... it's all he can do to ride the wave of rule-mediating invincibility through the terrible trifectic gauntlet of monopoly, mousetrap, and uno... for the win...
... We don't necessarily grow out of this mindset either... we all have an idea of how the world should work... it doesn't make us right but still when someone breaks them we get angry... and in turn we set rules for others... not always fair to both sides... we abuse power... and try to guarantee we'll always be on top... there's no point trying to argue the rules the way you see them if the other person is playing with a whole different set of rules... at best you can try to change their mind... most of the time you have to appeal to them according to their rules... but sometimes their rules haven't changed since they were 5, and their rules are unfair in every way, and you don't want to appeal to their rules or live under the nature of their laws... and it's not hard to pick these people out... they have a hard time keeping people around them... they're never, ever wrong... and it was always the other person's fault.

Oooohh

Danelle shares her school with the world of fashion... I pick her up inside her office in hopes of one day rubbing shoulders with someone famous enough that I can recognize... on the way up in the elevator... conversation starter... between an obvious pot-head guy actor and two girls... Ah, 15th floor, So what brings you here... high fashion photo shoot the answer... seconds later... after looking both of the girls over... he turns to the plainer of the two and asks... so, are you taking the pictures?... ... ... uncomfortable... ... ... again second later... flinching a little, perturbed, she turns... no, I'm doing the makeup... ... ... and in turn, I put my head down, sunglasses down... and get ready to walk out when we reach 15... 11... 12... thank goodness no 13...
